Sounds good!

Bollywood soundtracks are getting out of the filmy bracket to present the listeners something new, innovative and different. TOI zooms in on this musical trend.
Sounds good!
Music in Bollywood has undergone a sea change over various eras.
The melodies, the tempos, the lyrics they have all evolved over the years. Contemporary Bollywood music has truly redefined filmy music and is creating waves across the globe. Music directors are keen to experiment with various styles, genres and types of sound to dish out something new and interesting to the listeners.
When our new-found chocolate boy Imran Khan sported a rugged look in his latest release, the whole dark look was complimented by the racy number Mit Jaaye sung by Sandeep Vyas, thanks to the techno-trance music effects in it.
1x1 polls
The number Tu Bole Main Boloon by A R Rahman in the film Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na has a jazz feel with the harmonies of saxophone and trumpet blended in. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have been successfully able to get listeners hooked on to the soundtrack of Rock On!!
These songs are the soul of the films, and have even become youth anthems of sorts. While the Bachna Ae Haseeno title track had a rap version with which Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba had a great time grooving.
The whole world is globalised today. In terms of our music, we are getting to listen to a much wider variety. More importantly, we are being influenced by music from all over the world. And, this is a good change, because now the audiences are ready for it more than ever, thinks singer Dominique Cerejo who has tried to bring in a soul feel to the song Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein from Rock On!!
Be it the hip-hop feel in the song Right Here Right Now from Bluffmaster! or the Punjabi flavoured Nagada from Jab We Met, Bollywood is dabbling in different genres, and this makes tuning in so much more enjoyable for the listeners. Agrees music director-vocalist-lyricist Vishal Dadlani, while trying to break away from the shackles of the word genre, This has been going on for sometime now. The people who make films now are much younger and cooler, and so the new music. But, to a music director, his music cannot be classified into types, genres or anything like that. Music is music.

The techno ditty from the film Musafir sung by KK gained immense popularity, and so have all the songs sung by Kailesh Kher and others who have touched upon the Sufi style. The classical number Aaoge Jab Tum... directed by Sandesh Shandilya in Jab We Met has also caught the listeners fancy. These days, its not necessary that songs have to be typically filmy. I think every film demands its own genre and the character of the music is dictated by that. A new stream has opened up, giving more scope to experiment with music. And, the acceptance of songs that are different has gone up, feels Suleiman from the music director duo Salim-Suleiman who made SRK rap in Chak De! India and they are now looking forward to their soon-to-be-released venture directed by Madhur Bhandarkar.
So, its time to turn up the volume in your car stereo as you tap your feet to the latest hip sounds from Bollywood!
